ST. JOHN’S CHURCH
Located on Hwy 243, just inside the city limits of
Mt.
Pleasant. This is a fine example of a plantation church was a result of the dream of Leonidas Polk, who became Bishop of Louisiana and later a general in the Confederate army. Land was given by the four Polk brothers where their plantations intersected and they helped in the building of the church. The foundation stones were quarried from a site nearby; and the altar, reredos, communion rail and balcony were made from a large wild cherry tree on the site. The church was consecrated by
Tennessee’s first Episcopal Bishop James Otey in 1842. The church remains today just as it was when it was built. In the cemetery behind the church are buried many members of the Polk family and all but one of the deceased Bishops of Tennessee. The only church service held today is the annual Whitsunday service. |
