The first of Polk Plantations from "Rattle and Snap" tract of 5,648 acres. Built in 1832 by Lucius Polk, the third son of  William Polk. It was named in memory of the Polk brother who died at Yale when he was 20 years old. Lucius built house first then went after a wife, Mary Jane East, niece of Mrs. Andrew Jackson. Rachel Jackson died on the eve of Andrew's first inauguration. Mary Jane and her Aunt Emily Donelson went to Washington to be "Uncle Andrew's" White House hosts. She was well received in Washington and became engaged to a Lt. in the Navy. Lucius went to bring her back and Jackson told her "Take care, my dear, with love. Marriage is heaven, without it, hell". They were married at the White House. Col. Henry Yeatman married the Polk's second daughter. After the death of Lucius and Mary Jane, the Yeatman's inherited Hamilton Place. Col. Yeatman had survived many battles of the Civil War only to die in an act of kindness. He tried to save his faithful dog from the wheels of a train and was crushed and brought home to die. This home is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
