Maury County Recreation

The hills and valleys of Maury County provide an excellent backdrop for outdoor adventures. If you’re hiking or biking you quickly realize why the area was once labeled "the Dimple of the Universe." The trails within the City and County Parks as well as in the Yanahli area are wonderful for hiking and biking. A portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway, great for biking, runs through the western edge of the county.

If you like canoeing or kayaking, the 270 miles of the Duck River that run through several cities and counties, provide all the diversity you could ask for…wildlife, scenic views, gravel bars, sloughs and bottomlands to traverse. There’s an area for every skill level.

There’s fishing, caving, golfing and horseback riding…lots of reasons to visit us for an outdoor experience.

BICYCLING

Maury County is blessed with some of the most scenic and enjoyable hiking areas in the country. Whether you challenge the 400-plus miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway that runs from Maury County to Natchez, Mississippi or take an afternoon ride through our scenic backroads or enjoy a challenging mountain bike trail at Chickasaw Park, you will know why our area was referred to as the "Dimple of the Universe."

HUNTING

Hunting is superb due to Maury County's large agricultural base and abundant ponds, lakes and rivers. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency maintains and opens several management areas in our area. They can provide maps, license information and season updates for all game. Williamsport Lakes Management Area features 1,800 acres of hunting land open to the public. The Tennessee Valley Authority opens large tracts of land for public hunting. All lands require proper licenses and may require special permits. Call in advance for specific requirements. Area sporting goods and hunting supply stores can provide good local information and regulations. Remember, secure written permission from the owner of private lands before hunting on his/her grounds.

SPELUNKING

The world "down under" Maury County is as exciting as the world above. The Southport Saltpeter Cave is one of the largest in Middle Tennessee. During the Civil War it was mined for nitrate to use in making gun powder. It is also believed that Confederate troops were housed here. It features unique formations and large caverns. The cave is open by appointment for guided and unguided tours.
